How to boot FixMeStick on Windows 8, 8.1, or 10 using the Use a Device feature

Note: Before following these instructions on a computer using Windows 8, 8.1, or 10, it is necessary to first turn off a setting called Fast Start-up. You can do so by following the instructions here

How to boot the FixMeStick using the Use a Device feature on Windows 8, 8.1, or 10

1. Insert your FixMeStick in your computer while the computer is turned on. 

2. Click on the Start Menu.

3. Click on the Power symbol - it should give you 3 options: Sleep, Shutdown, and Restart. 

4. While holding down on the Shift key on your keyboard, click Restart. You must be holding down on the Shift key while you click the Restart button or else it will not work.

5. Your computer will restart to a blue screen that says "Choose an Option."

6. Click on "Use a Device." 

7. From the list of options, select the FixMeStick USB. If you do not see anything that says FixMeStick, it might be appearing as either "USB removable device" or "Generic USB device." You simply want to select the USB option. 

8. The FixMeStick will now boot. 

Note: If you are having trouble getting to the "Choose an Option" page using the Shift-Restart method, you can also access them in other ways depending on what operating system you are using. Please see the instructions below: 

Windows 8:

1. Insert your FixMeStick in your computer.

2. Access "PC Settings" by right-clicking on the windows key in the bottom left, clicking on "Search," and then typing in the search bar that appears "PC Settings." Or move your cursor to the bottom right of your screen until the vertical menu bar appears, clicking "search," and then searching for "PC Settings."

3. In "PC Settings" select "General" and then click "Restart Now" under "Advanced Startup."

4. Your PC will restart to the "Choose an Option" page.

Windows 8.1

1. Insert your FixMeStick in your computer.

2. Access "PC Settings" by right-clicking on the windows key in the bottom left, clicking on "Search," and then typing in the search bar that appears "PC Settings." Or move your cursor to the bottom right of your screen until the vertical menu bar appears, clicking "search," and then searching for "PC Settings."

3. Select "Update and Recovery."

4. Choose "Recovery" and then click "Restart Now" under "Advanced Startup."

5. Your PC will restart to the "Choose an Option" page.

Windows 10:

1. Insert your FixMeStick in your computer.

2. Click on the Start Menu and select "Settings."

3. Then select "Update & security."

4. Select "Recovery" and then click on "Restart now" under Advanced start-up.

5. Your PC will restart to the "Choose an Option" page.
