What is OneDrive’s File on Demand Feature
OneDrive’s File on Demand feature frees up space on your drive by allowing you to access your files that are in cloud storage without downloading them directly onto your computer. These files are only accessible when you have an internet connection, and appear in your File Explorer like any other files you may have saved to your device.
You’ll be able to tell how a file is available to you by looking at the small icon that appears to the bottom left of the file icon:
- The blue cloud icon indicates that the file is an online only file. This file can only be accessed when you have an internet connection and is not saved directly to your drive.
- The green checkmark/white circle icon indicates that the file is locally available - meaning you can access the file even without an internet connection. Note an online only file will become locally available if you open it.
- The white checkmark/green circle icon indicates that the file is always available to you. This would mean that the file is saved directly to your device.
While this feature does come in handy for saving disk space, it will prevent your FixMeStick from being able to scan these files if they aren’t saved directly to your drive.
Steps to Disable File on Demand
Luckily, OneDrive has made it quite simple to disable and re-enable this feature. To disable File on Demand, follow these steps:
Step 1: Locate and select the OneDrive icon at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen in your taskbar.
Step 2: Click the Help and Settings icon at the top right-hand corner of the OneDrive window. A drop-down menu will appear. From here, select Settings.
Step 3: Select Sync and Backup on the left-hand side of the Settings window. You’ll see an option to view Advanced Settings towards the top. Once the Advanced Settings options are expanded, you’ll see an option to Download All OneDrive Files Now.
Step 4: After you’ve selected to Download All OneDrive Files, a pop-up will appear asking you to confirm that you’d like to download all of your OneDrive files. It will also show you the total size of the files to be downloaded. You’ll need to hit Yes to continue.
Step 5: Wait for the download to complete before trying to run another FixMeStick scan. Once the files are saved to your drive, you should no longer see the OneDrive pop-up during your FixMeStick scan.
